The name Kanon is derived from the word canon, which has three definitions relevant
to our project:
~ A collection of literary or artistic works considered to be of the highest
quality.
~ A general law, rule, principle, or criterion by which something is judged.
~ A model or paradigm.
Because we hope to be a digital repository of the world’s greatest creative works and
a standard of excellence for human art and knowledge, the name Kanon is consistent
with these objectives.
Kanon has a long etymological history. It comes from the Old French canon, which
meant "learned" and originally derives from the Latin canōn, from the Ancient Greek
κανών (kanón, “measuring rod, standard”), akin to κάννα (kanna, “reed”), perhaps
from Semitic (Arabic ( ﻗﺎﻧﻮﻥنQānūn, “law”) Hebrew ( קנהqaneh, “reed”).
Kanon is a word with similar meanings in nearly all Indo-European languages,
making it easy for it to become popular and understood in many countries.
